What a Botox Treatment Reminded Me About Problem Solving

by Dave Beck on April 9, 2010

injectionToday I had the pleasure of receiving my second Botox treatment!

Now before you go jumping to any vain conclusions I probably should explain exactly why I was having Botox in the first place. A number of years ago I developed a nasty sore underneath my right foot which was a high risk of getting infected and consistently sent my foot and leg into spasm. It is bloody uncomfortable and if left untreated could have been dangerous.

After numerous consultations with doctors they decided that a treatment Botox might be the best solution to help get the necessary flexibility back into my foot to help it sit in a more comfortable position without so much pressure being directed through the sore spot underneath my foot.

The idea was to inject the Botox into a number of muscles in my lower leg which would render them useless for a couple of months. While these muscles were inactive we were then initiate an extensive stretching regime to help the foot sit more correctly and hopefully fix the problem.

On the day of the initial treatment I was surprised to see the doctor lining up where he would be performing the injection — it was nowhere near my foot or ankle! He was working on areas high up on my calf muscle, just below the knee. It turns out the problem is being caused by tightening of muscles higher in my leg which in turn were twisting my foot into a strange angle.

An inexperienced person would more than likely be looking at the ankle and foot area (like I was thinking)  and begin work on distributing the weight better. However the spinal injury specialists were able to quickly identify the problem area and recommended Botox as a treatment.

The end result — it worked like a charm!

The moral of this story is that you shouldn’t always rely on the obvious being the source of a problem. Sometimes you need to look at the big picture to identify problems that are perhaps being initiated much further down the supply chain.

A perfect example would be to take a long hard look at your referral source, or the keywords you are targeting with your SEO campaign. Get this wrong and you don’t have a hope in hell of making decent sales.

The message here is nothing groundbreaking. It’s just an nice little reminder that everything may not be as it initially seems.
